Komen was founded in 1982 by Nancy Brinker in memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen. There are 125 Affiliates that are volunteer driven and the foundation has invested more than $1 billion dollars in the mission.

The West Virginia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in February of 2000.

75% of the monies raised from the West Virginia Race for the Cure® will stay in West Virginia with the other 25% going directly to Komen for research. Sponsorship allows the West Virginia Affiliate to fund the ‘Race for the Cure’ as well as educational materials and services year round.
With ongoing fundraising through the sale of merchandise and local events, we add to the amount given in grants to the much needed programs of the state.
Our Mission is to take care of “the here and now” needs of our communities. This is accomplished with Grants, Education and Public Policy. While Susan G Komen for the Cure National is looking out for the future need – the cure- through research.

You are welcome to visit our office location to see all the SGK for the Cure items for purchase. Your gift shopping is a gift twice over. We also have Co Survivor items to help you thank those family and friends that were your support, in time of need. Help us save lives in West Virginia and ultimately The World. More of what you spend here stays here, to provide funding to our community health programs that support the underinsured and underserved.

How funds are used pie chartFor 25 years, friends who have shared the vision of Susan G. Komen for the Cure have become partners in advancing our mission.

Together we have made tremendous progress toward eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease through research, education, screening and treatment. The generosity of our donors is vital as we continue our efforts to help breast cancer patients today, as well as to invest in the health of future generations.

As a supporter of Komen for the Cure, you will receive our national newsletter, which includes updates about the latest research on breast cancer prevention and treatment; periodic mailings about breast health and breast cancer; and access to our National Toll-Free Breast Care Helpline for your questions about breast health and breast cancer, including information on how to find a low-cost or free mammogram.

IN MEMORIUM GIFTS…

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."

"Gone where?"

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side, and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There, she is gone!" there are other eyes watching her coming, and there are other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!" And that is dying.

- Henry van Dyke (1852 – 1933) American author, educator, and clergyman

How appropriate ships are referred to as women, and yes they sail on. We will not forget nor will we let down our mission. Through great loss many see fit to continue the fight. So take up the ‘cause’ and ‘fight on’ and in doing so we remember the fallen and the courageous that give on so we can find the finish line “the cure”.
